Montesquiou-Fezensac, François-Xavier-Marc-Antoine, duke de
(1756-1832)
   political figure
Born in the château of Marsan, Gascony, François-Xavier-Marc-Antoine, duke de Montesquiou was a representative-at-large for the clergy to the estates general in 1789. During the revolution of 1789, he served in the National Assembly (1791) as one of the "aristocrats," partisans of the ancien régime, and was opposed to the abolition of privileges and to the civil constitution of the clergy. He emigrated in 1792 and, returning to France in 1795, joined the royalist faction (see pierre-paul royer-collard). Exiled to Menton during the first empire, Montesquiou-Fezensac served as minister of the interior under the restoration (1814-15), was made a peer (1815), a count (1817), and then a duke (1821). He was elected to the Académie Française in 1816.
